Cabinet Painting / Re-finishing

Cabinet painting in Austin, done like furniture

Painted cabinets are the cheapest way to change a kitchen and the easiest thing in the house to get wrong. Brush marks, tacky doors that stick shut, paint peeling off the rails within a year. We spray them, in a controlled setup, with coatings made for cabinetry, and we back the workmanship for five years.

What you get

Cabinet refinishing that holds up to daily use

A kitchen gets touched more than any other room in the house. Doors slam, fingernails catch the edge of a rail, cleaner gets sprayed on a stile and wiped off twenty times a month. A wall coating cannot survive that, which is why cabinets need a different product and a different process from the rest of your interior.

We take a personal interest in our customer's painting projects, while providing exceptional service and quality craftsmanship. There is education and preparation that needs to occur so your project goes smoothly and according to your expectations. On a cabinet job that preparation is most of the work, and it is the part that separates a finish lasting a decade from one that chips by Christmas.

Doors sprayed off site

Doors and drawer fronts come off, get numbered, and are sprayed horizontally so the coating lays down flat. Nothing sags, nothing runs, and no brush ever touches a visible face.

Degrease, sand, bond

Years of cooking grease comes off first. Then every surface is scuff sanded and primed with a bonding primer chosen for what your cabinets are actually made of, whether that is oak, maple, thermofoil, or a factory-finished slab.

Grain filled if you want it smooth

Open-grain oak will read as oak through paint unless the grain is filled. We show you both options on a sample before you decide, because one costs more and only you can say whether it matters.

Your kitchen stays usable

Boxes are masked and sprayed in place with containment and extraction. You keep your sink, your fridge, and your stove through the job. Most kitchens are back in service inside a week.

Why refinish

Benefits of custom cabinet staining and painting

Adds value and aesthetics to your home. Custom cabinet staining and painting adds value to your home and is a much more affordable (and less of a hassle) option rather than replacing your cabinets with custom painting and staining, you can customize the color, texture, and overall appearance and make your cabinets look much nicer than with a simple, plain cabinet.

Protects your cabinets from wear and tear, the elements, dirt, and water. Cabinets, being made of wood, are very susceptible to the environment. Water, air, dirt, and pollutants can cause damage overtime, leading to a cabinet replacement sooner rather than later.

Furthermore, plain wood is more attractive to insects who eat wood to survive. When you coat your cabinets with a paint or stain, these insects are much less likely to attack your cabinets. Plus, you’ll have one more barrier between your cabinets and the dirt and oil on messy hands.

Painted cabinets or stained cabinets are easy to maintain. They are easy to clean, requiring simple soap and water to wipe them down. They hide dust and dirt, which is important when you have a house full of kids and pets.

Once you paint or stain your cabinets, odds are you won’t have to again for a good decade or more.

The process

Six steps, and you know all of them before we start

We do this through a process of communication and education so we can co-create the best possible painting experience with you. We call this the Certainty Service System.

  1. Walkthrough and samples

We open doors, check what the cabinets are built from, look for water damage at the sink base, and count doors and drawers. Color consultation is included, and you see a sprayed sample of your color and sheen before anything is committed.

  2. Written proposal

After your initial consultation, clients get the project proposal in a quick turnaround time. It lists the products by name, the number of coats, what is included, and what is not.

  3. Setup and containment

Floors, counters, and appliances are covered. Hardware and hinges come off and are bagged by location. Doors are labeled so every one goes back on the opening it came from.

  4. Repair and prep

Degreasing, scuff sanding, filling dings, re-gluing loose joints, and replacing a rotted sink base panel if there is one. A walkthrough is completed prior to paint application in order to show you the repairs and prep work.

  5. Prime and spray

Bonding primer, sanded between coats, then two finish coats of a cabinet-grade coating. Boxes and face frames are sprayed in place, doors and drawer fronts flat on racks.

  6. Cure, rehang, inspect

Doors cure before they are rehung, so nothing sticks when it closes. Hardware goes back, doors are adjusted, and we walk the kitchen with you under the lights you actually use.

Questions

Cabinet painting, answered plainly

How much does cabinet painting cost in Austin?

Cost follows door and drawer count, what the cabinets are made of, and whether you want the grain filled. A small galley kitchen with twenty doors is a different job from a large kitchen with an island, a butler's pantry, and forty-plus openings. That is why we count on site and put the number in writing rather than quoting a square-foot rate. Estimates are free, and most full-kitchen projects qualify for the current offer.

Is refinishing cheaper than replacing my cabinets?

Substantially, when the boxes are sound. Cabinet carcasses in most Austin homes are solidly built and the only thing dating the kitchen is the color and sheen. Refinishing keeps your layout, your storage, and your countertops, and it takes about a week instead of a month. If the boxes are failing, we will tell you that rather than paint over it.

How long until I can use my kitchen again?

You keep the sink, fridge, and stove through most of the job. Doors are off for several days while they are sprayed and cured, so the openings are exposed during that stretch. Most kitchens are fully back together inside a week. Coatings continue hardening for a few weeks after that, so we ask you to be gentle with the doors early on.

Will the wood grain still show through?

On open-grain species like oak, yes, unless the grain is filled first. Filling adds labor and cost. Some homeowners want the texture, some want a slab-smooth factory look. We spray you a sample of each so you are choosing from something you can see and touch, not a description.

Can you paint thermofoil, laminate, or already-painted cabinets?

Yes to all three, with the right bonding primer for the surface. Thermofoil needs particular care where it has started lifting at a corner, and we address that in prep rather than spraying over it. Previously painted cabinets are often the easiest, provided the existing coating is still bonded.

Do you paint bathroom vanities and built-ins too?

We do, and they are frequently added to a kitchen project because the crew and the spray setup are already on site. Built-in bookcases, mudroom lockers, laundry cabinetry, and fireplace surrounds all take the same process.

Does the 5-year guarantee cover cabinets?

Yes. The 5-year professional workmanship guarantee and the annual inspections apply, same as on any other project. Call us to schedule an inspection. See the guarantee outline on your contract agreement for what is included on your job.
